Would you like to learn Renaissance counterpoint?
A fun, quick and easy new way to learn Renaissance counterpoint, even if it’s your first time or you think you’re not that skilled!
Did you know that learning counterpoint is very easy?
I know you might be thinking “ah yeah? I’ve always been told that counterpoint is a difficult art and that requires years of practice“, of course, you don’t learn it in a week, but the question is not about time or difficulty, but about method!
In the Renaissance counterpoint was taught to all children, and all those who played a musical instrument knew how to compose a counterpoint and even improvise it.
Why is it no longer like this today?
Sure, there have been many centuries in between, from the Renaissance to today, and styles have changed, but why does it seem so difficult to study counterpoint today?
Well, you see, the problem is the method!
In ancient times counterpoint was taught on the keyboard, not only on paper, and the pupil was gradually taught models and patterns, which he then applied in different contexts, and so he learned by playing, writing, and above all having fun, the noble art of counterpoint, necessary for every musician.
Today, however, the teaching of counterpoint takes place on paper, the teacher gives you the task and you have to carry it out on paper following a certain (sometimes large and confusing) number of rules, without having references and not feeling sure if what you are writing is correct…
It goes without saying that this method is slow and also harmful.
In fact, by doing so:
💥 You can’t write beautiful, singable melodies that fit the style, and that can only add to confusion in your mind.
💥 You have a hard time seeing the interval numbers in the notes, and you always miss a few parallel fifths and octaves, which, I can confirm, is remarkably frustrating!
💥 You take a long time to do an exercise that you could do in 5 minutes, wasting a lot of time.
💥 You risk getting stuck and not being able to continue studying counterpoint, spending a lot of money in various lessons without reaching your goals!
And I’m sure this can demoralize you, in fact, if you study counterpoint today, it means that
Counterpoint is something that you really love.
And, if you are reading this page, it means that you are truly fascinated by this ancient art, as it has always fascinated me too.
To create a new approach and a new method that can solve the problems of teaching and learning counterpoint nowadays, I have designed a method through which you can learn counterpoint while having fun, not only on paper, but above all on the keyboard, learning and having fun at the same time.
All this through face-to-face online lessons, tailored to your goals!
You may be wondering at this point what are the real advantages of this method.
Here they are listed clearly and precisely:
✅ One-to-one online lessons through a method that favors playing and improvisational practice, which means that you will take at least half the time (and money) that you would spend with the “traditional” method!
✅ At the center of each lesson is your main goal.
In fact, in the first lesson I will ask you what your main goal is and we will build together a program based on it for free, thanks to which you will know exactly how long it will take you to reach a certain goal, such as writing a bicinium for two voices.
✅ The duration of each lesson is 1 hour and a half (50% more time than the duration of a normal one hour lesson), which allows you to deal with any new topic calmly, so that you can understand it clearly!
✅ You will receive all the material you will need PDF and for free, at no additional cost, so that you do not have to make additional investments in books or have no reference tracks.
✅ You will also have an e-mail address to which you can write whenever you want, send the exercises you have done, ask all the questions you want if you have any doubts, and you know that you will receive an answer in 48 hours maximum.
Are you curious to know some work that you will get to do too?
Watch some examples from my YouTube Channel:
As you can see, the author (Anonymous Bolognese of the 17th century) has written only the bass line.
The other voices must be composed at the keyboard or on the paper.
You too can learn to do this, it is not very difficult, but it requires you to necessarily follow a special method which is the strong point of this lessons!
In October 2022 the Bonporti Prize was held in Rovereto with a new world avant-garde category “New historical composition”.
During an 8-hour cloister we had to write a composition on a theme drawn by lot.
My composition, a Recercare; it was appreciated by the commission and for this I got the “Merit Award“.
You too can learn to compose with antique style counterpoint!
